One of the more exciting procedures being discovered by patients in search of younger-looking skin is microdermabrasion. This non-invasive medical treatment involves blowing a steady stream of granular material (aluminum oxide crystals) against the skin in a highly controlled manner, with the intent of removing a very thin layer of skin. At the same time, the used crystals and debraded skin are suctioned away by a closed-loop device. By carefully controlling the pressure and suction controls, as well as selecting appropriately sized crystals, the plastic surgeon can fine tune the dermabrasion process to suit individual needs. Microdermbrasion is as suitable for erasing fine lines, wrinkles, and sunspots as it is for treating acne and minimizing scars and stretch marks.

Microdermabrasion involves no sedation or anesthesia. Patients can resume normal activity upon leaving the physician's office.
